BRIEF

The SunLife team tasked our team with figuring out how to encourage young Canadians to plan for and invest in their financial future.

WHAT WE DID

We interviewed young Canadians, collected insights, and ideated. We then designed an app that includes the top three must-haves, based on our research; personalization, education, budgeting.

RESULT

We designed an application that addresses financial literacy through videos about various elements of personal banking and includes a budgeting feature based on goals the user inputs. Watching and learning the content earns users money and they can learn better financial habits.

Problem

Sunlife Financial approached our team looking for a solution about how to get young Canadians to plan for and invest in their financial future. They mentioned that they had limited experience researching young people (15-29 years old) which indicated to us that we required more research to make a functional design.

Process

We conducted multiple rounds of interviews where we asked participants what “investing” means to them, who are their main financial influences are, if they currently have a savings plan. Questions like these allowed us to delve deeper into developing an understanding of the participant’s previous financial knowledge and how we can add value to their experience.

Below, are examples of the disovery sessions we had as a team to try and understand our audience's needs.

Using a feedback-driven, insight-focused approach, we worked from a modified version of the Google Ventures Sprint model. Our goal was to create a human-centred solution that prioritized simple, functional and meaningful experiences. After conducting the interviews, our team gathered and participated in an affinity mapping session. This exercise uncovered three major themes from the participants’ answers; users are looking for a solution that can be personalized to their needs, a place where they can visualize their goals, and offer them a way to become more educated about the financial choices they make.

I then created a site map of what pages and features our platform required. This was necessary so that the information architecture and page layout remained simple and easy to navigate. Our team worked together to apply a balanced approach to the project, harmonizing the needs of our users and delivering a solution to the client that addresses the problem they presented.

Final Designs

Working remotely due to the sudden rise of COVID-19, our team worked diligently to create a design that aligned with our research and the client's feedback. Below, are previews of the final design of the app and a Figma link to the full prototype and case study.

Next Steps

Complete user testing on the final screens and refine the design further, however, doing so within the client’s constraints.
